How to choose a child’s backpack:
If your child is making regular trips to playgroup, pre-school or a day at Granny’s
they may need to take their own bag of essentials. Your choice of child’s bag may be
influenced by style, size of child, how far your child needs to carry the bag and where the
bag is stored. Here, Valerie Salomon, of Becky and Lolo gives her six tips on what to
look out for:
1.
The right pre-school backpack should not be wider than your child’s torso. The
bottom of the backpack should rest against the curve of your child’s lower back.
2.
The bag should have two shoulder straps, rather than one, ideally adjustable
straps.
3.
Will the bag clean well, is it machine washable? Check the material –
lightweight material such as cotton or nylon is best for younger children.
4.
Can your child use it? Are the openings wide enough for your child to get things
in easily? Look for simple drawstring closures, magnetic clasps and easy
to grasp tags which are all good for small hands.

5.
A favourite character may win on design but think about how long you want the
backpack to last – one term or a few years. Can you find a design to last a little
longer?
6.
Where will the bag be stored? Is it for nursery lockers, or to hang up at
playgroup? Backpacks with wheels may be good for pulling along, but might
not fit inside lockers, bulky backpacks are often unpopular in overcrowded
cloakrooms where as drawstring bags often take up less room on a hook.
